Climate Adaptation – Water Quality and Health

EPA works with states, tribes, operators of public water systems, and certified laboratories to ensure safe drinking water. EPA also supports local and state efforts to protect and clean recreational waters such as lakes and beaches by supporting the monitoring and notification efforts of local water programs.
Drinking water quality
Drinking water quality may be affected by an increase in average temperature and frequency and intensity of storms.
Recreational water quality
Stormwater runoff from intense storms may carry pollutants and sewage, possibly decreasing recreational water quality. Harmful algal blooms, which can occur more frequently due to changes in the environment, also impact the quality of recreational waters and their ability for use.
