Alternative Disinfection Devices

EPA researchers are building on an expansive body of biological wide-area remediation research by applying that knowledge to reduce the risk of exposure to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. This research will help state, tribal, local, and territorial governments—including public health agencies—and guide homeowners, business owners, and workplace managers to reduce the risk of exposure to SARS-CoV-2.

The COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted public transportation with a significant reduction in ridership due to changes in regular commuting as well as losses related to jobs and tourism. In order to prepare for a safe return, transportation agencies have implemented intense cleaning procedures relying on a list of EPA approved disinfectants for use against SARS-CoV-2 on surfaces, as SARS-CoV-2 has been shown to survive on numerous types of surfaces for a period of hours to days. Alternative disinfection approaches, such as ultraviolet (UV) light, are being considered to complement routine cleaning and disinfection practices, either as permanently installed or as mobile devices that can be deployed amongst subway vehicles while at maintenance yards and depots.
