Old Hwy 275 and N 288th Street Superfund Site, Valley, Nebraska – Fact Sheet, October 2021
Site Update
About the Site
In-depth work is underway to complete a Remedial Investigation at the Old Hwy 275 and N 288th Street Superfund Site (site). After a site is listed on the National Priorities List, EPA typically performs a Remedial Investigation to gather data needed to characterize site conditions; determine the nature of the waste; assess risk to human health and the environment; and conduct treatability testing to evaluate the potential performance and cost of the treatment technologies being considered. To view the site history and learn more about the site, visit EPA’s Site Profile Page.
Site Milestones
At the site, EPA has ensured that properties with private wells where contaminants were detected are connected to the city of Valley’s public water supply or have whole-house filtration systems. In 2019, EPA installed several permanent and temporary monitoring wells; continued to sample existing wells; sampled indoor air in properties over contaminated groundwater; and sampled lakes, ditches and sediment. Additional work, including installation of additional wells to address data gaps, is ongoing. EPA will continue to conduct additional investigations at the site to determine the full nature and extent of the contamination.
TCE
Trichloroethylene (TCE, also trichloroethene) is a contaminant of concern (COC) at the site. COCs are chemicals that need to be addressed by a cleanup action because they are a potential threat to human health or the environment. This kind of organic chemical compound evaporates under normal indoor temperatures and pressure. TCE is part of some industrial and commercial processes, including those in dry cleaning facilities. It is one of the most common contaminants at Superfund sites.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) has online summaries about contaminants, called ToxFAQs, where you can one about trichloroethylene (TCE).
Upcoming Work in Your Neighborhood
EPA will be collecting water samples routinely in the area over the next several years to determine the full extent of the contamination near the site.
