EPA and City of Concord highlight former Concord Stables Site recently selected for $678,000 Brownfields Cleanup Grant
BOSTON (July 1, 2025) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Regional Administrator Mark Sanborn joined Mayor Byron Champlin, New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services Assistant Commissioner Adam Crepeau, and staff from local and state offices to tour the former Concord Stables site, a 0.5-acre property in Concord recently selected to receive a $678,000 Brownfields Cleanup Grant. This grant will support environmental remediation and community engagement activities at the contaminated site, which originally operated as a stable for city work horses in 1905 and later became office and storage space.
"This Brownfields investment reflects our commitment to common-sense, community-driven solutions that clean up contaminated properties and return them to productive use," said EPA Regional Administrator Mark Sanborn. "By working in partnership with the City of Concord, we're helping to turn a long-vacant site into an asset for residents and the local economy—delivering on EPA's mission while being good stewards of taxpayer dollars."
"The City of Concord is honored to be a recipient of the EPA Brownfields Clean-Up Grant, which will support this important historical restoration project for the city. The funding provides the opportunity to restore and reactivate the former municipal stables building into a safe public space for the community," said Mayor Byron O. Champlin, City of Concord.
The City plans to use grant funds to clean up the former stables site, has been vacant and unused since 1990. The cleanup will include abating hazardous building materials such as asbestos and lead paint in the structure.
