EPA and LDEQ Update on Smitty’s Supply Fire Air Monitoring Readings Below Actionable Levels
Roseland, LA — The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), continue to actively monitor and respond to the fire incident at the Smitty’s facility in Roseland, Louisiana. This remains an active emergency, and first responders are still working to suppress the fire.
A one-mile evacuation zone has been established around the facility. LDEQ and EPA teams are conducting air quality monitoring both within and outside this zone. As of this release, all air monitoring results have shown either non-detectable readings or levels well below health-based or actionable thresholds, as confirmed earlier today by the Louisiana State Police (LSP).
In addition to air monitoring, LDEQ is currently collecting water samples from areas impacted by offsite soot deposition. These samples will be analyzed to determine any potential environmental impacts. Results are expected within the next 48 hours.
Personnel from both EPA Region 6 and LDEQ are on-site and are working closely with the Unified Command and other federal, state, and local agencies to ensure a coordinated response.
We extend our gratitude to the courageous first responders and all agencies involved in managing this incident. Public safety remains our top priority, and we urge residents to follow local authorities' guidance, including any evacuation or safety instructions.
