EPA Region 4 to Review Cleanup at Kerr-McGee Chemical Superfund Site

ATLANTA (April 30, 2026) – U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is initiating a comprehensive and legally required five-year review for the Kerr-McGee Corporation Jacksonville Superfund Site in 2026 to ensure that the remedies in place are still protective of human health and the environment.

Kerr-McGee Chemical Corp. Jacksonville Superfund Site is one of 56 superfund sites in Region 4 scheduled for five-year review in 2026.

The 31-acre Kerr-McGee Chemical Corp. Jacksonville Superfund Site was placed on the National Priorities List (NPL) in 2010 because of contaminated soil and groundwater caused by fertilizer and pesticide production from 1893 to 1978. The site currently is unoccupied and undeveloped. Site contamination does not currently threaten people living and working nearby. With nearby residences and businesses on a municipal water supply system and not using private wells as a drinking source, there is no direct exposure to any site-related contamination.

Since 2011, EPA has led investigation and cleanup activities in coordination with Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) and Greenfield Environmental Multistate Trust LLC. Tronox, the successor to Kerr-McGee Chemical Corp. and the site’s Potentially Responsible Party, led site investigation and cleanup activities prior to declaring bankruptcy and relinquishing ownership of the site.
