Summary

The EPA is conducting the fifth five-year review of the Michigan Disposal Service (Cork Street Landfill) Superfund site located at 2800 E. Cork Street, Kalamazoo, Michigan. The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up – with waste managed on-site – to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment.

The previous review found that actions at the site align with the remedy selected by the EPA and that it continues to be protective of human health and the environment. In the long-term, protectiveness requires ongoing monitoring, evaluation of current institutional controls, and mapping methane gas migration to determine if a more aggressive collection system is required.

Reports and previous five year reviews can be found at the Michigan Disposal Service (Cork Street Landfill) webpage. The review should be completed by September 29, 2025.
