Public Notice: EPA Begins First Review of Bautsch-Gray Mine Superfund Site
Summary
EPA is conducting a five-year review of the Bautsch-Gray Mine site. The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites where remediation activities have started with waste managed on-site - to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment. This is the first five-year review of this site.
EPA's cleanup of Bautsch-Gray Mine site began in November 2020, the triggering date for the five-year review. To date EPA has implemented site control measures to stabilize the mine tailings waste onsite, manage stormwater, and prevent future releases to the environment. The engineering design for the site cleanup, including the mine tailings cap, residential areas, wetlands, and wooded areas adjacent to the mine tailings, is ongoing. Currently, there are restrictions on the property that prevent the use of groundwater and disturbances of soils. The site is currently vacant.
More information is available at Bautsch-Gray Mine Superfund page. The review should be completed by November 2025.
