Public Notice: G&H Landfill Site Five-Year Review
Summary
EPA is conducting a five-year review of the G&H Landfill Superfund site. The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up – with waste managed on-site – to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment.
In 1990, EPA signed a Record of Decision, or ROD, which required placement of a cap over the landfill, and construction of a groundwater containment and leachate extraction system. Under a legal agreement with EPA, a group of potentially responsible parties, or PRPs, completed the cleanup in 1999, and has operated the remedial systems since that time.
The 2016 five-year review noted the presence of methane in perimeter probes along 23 Mile Road. In 2017, EPA required the PRPs to install a barrier to manage landfill gasses and ensure residences north of 23 Mile Road remain protected. Previously unidentified waste was discovered during installation of this barrier. Construction of the barrier resumed once the waste along the alignment of the ventilation trench was removed.
