Public Notice: Industrial Excess Landfill Site Five-Year Review
Summary
EPA is conducting a five-year review of the Industrial Excess Landfill Superfund site. The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up – with waste managed on-site – to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment.
EPA’s selected cleanup plan for the site consisted of enhancement of the existing vegetative cover by planting trees and other plants; using natural processes such as decay, dilution and evaporation to clean up on-site and off-site groundwater contaminants; installation of new wells and upgrading or abandoning other wells as needed; installation of perimeter fencing; implementation of deed restrictions; maintaining an alternate water supply; and conducting additional design studies. Construction of the selected cleanup plan was completed in 2004 by EPA; however, the groundwater and landfill gas continue to be monitored both on and off the site. Since 2022, there has been extensive sampling of residential water wells, connection of residences to municipal water, and groundwater contaminant delineation related to the discovery of the emergent contaminant 1,4-dioxane.
