Public Notice: Little Mississinewa River Site Five-Year Review
Summary
EPA is conducting a five-year review of the Little Mississinewa River (LMR) Superfund site. The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up – with waste managed on-site – to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment.
Under EPA oversight, the potentially responsible parties (PRPs) addressed PCB contamination in the LMR from 1999-2010. The PCB-contaminated sediments and floodplain soils were excavated and disposed at an off-site licensed disposal facility. After the remedy was completed the PRPs started monitoring and maintenance throughout the site.
Since the PRPs were willing to fund and perform the investigation and cleanup under EPA oversight, EPA addressed the site using the Superfund Alternative (SA) approach. The SA approach uses the same process and standards for investigation and cleanup as sites on the National Priorities List, however SA sites are not eligible for federal funding.
