John Iiames, Ph.D.

Over his career at the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Dr. Iiames' research has centered on the examination of the air-water-land interface as it affects both aquatic ecosystems and local and regional air quality. Dr. Iiames is recognized nationally for his expertise in the remote sensing of vegetative biomass using multiple remotely sensed data types. This expertise, in conjunction with research efforts investigating the accuracy and error embedded within remotely sensed and in situ-derived data, has provided the water and air modeling communities with inputs required to support key integrated, multidisciplinary exposure science research. Dr. Iiames has been recognized Agency-wide and within the science community for his work as reflected by receiving the highest awards for his team-based EPA research efforts and for top honors in peer-reviewed remote sensing journals. He has been invited both nationally and internationally to speak on EPA research activities to diverse audiences including K-12, universities, professional conferences, and public meetings. He currently leads a team research effort investigating the effects of wildfire on drinking water quality and the assessment of prescribed fire burn area in the Flint Hills National Grassland ecosystem. Along with his research duties, Dr. Iiames also is a trained Air Resource Advisor being deployed on western wildfires yearly to model smoke dispersion for the Incident Management Teams. John resides in Raleigh, N.C. with his wife Michaela and has two grown children. He is an avid camping tour cyclist (bike) and follows Leicester City and Liverpool in the English Premier League.
