Scientific Integrity Surveys

EPA's Scientific Integrity Policy provides a framework to promote adherence to professional values and ethical standards in Agency work when conducting, managing, using the results of, and communicating about science and scientific activities. To continually assess the implementation of this Policy, EPA surveys employees to identify successes, challenges, and propose an action plan to address opportunities for improvement to enhance the culture of scientific integrity.


EPA 2021 Scientific Integrity Survey

The 2021 survey was launched on May 19, 2021 for a two-year recall period (2019-2020). The complete 2021 survey results can be found on the 2021 survey results page.

Successes of Scientific Integrity at EPA 

According to respondents, supervisors exhibited supportive behaviors towards principles of scientific integrity. 

Challenges of Scientific Integrity at EPA 

Only 8.7% of respondents were satisfied with the culture of scientific integrity at EPA, and political interference was ranked as the highest obstacle for achieving scientific integrity at EPA. 

Suggestions for Enhancing EPA’s Culture of Scientific Integrity 

Greater accountability was ranked as most useful for enhancing EPA’s culture of scientific integrity.
