Fact Sheet: Use of Landfilling for Biosolids Management
Sewage sludge may be disposed of in a municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill with other wastes or in a sewage sludge-only landfill commonly called a monofill. Sewage sludge disposal in MSW landfills is regulated under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and EPA’s accompanying regulations at 40 C.F.R. Part 258, Criteria for Municipal Solid Waste Landfills. Disposal in a monofill is regulated under Part 503 as surface disposal.
