EPA Requests Public Comments on Candidates for Letter Peer Review of White Paper for Asbestos Part 2 Risk Evaluation under TSCA
Released September 14, 2023
Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is opening a 15-day comment period to request input from the public on candidates under consideration to review the “2023 White Paper on the Quantitative Human Health Approach to be Applied in the Risk Evaluation for Asbestos Part 2” under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). EPA will be soliciting comments from the peer reviewers on the quantitative approach to assessing cancer and non-cancer risks for Part 2 of the risk evaluation for asbestos.
Biographies of these candidates are available on regulations.gov and through the Agency’s TSCA Scientific Peer Review Committees website.
The public comment period will be open until September 28, 2023. Comments should be submitted through the Federal eRulemaking Portal (www.regulations.gov) to docket EPA-HQ-OPPT-2023-0309. When providing comments, do not submit any information you consider to be confidential business information or other information whose disclosure is restricted by statute. Members of the public should also be aware that personal contact information, if included in any written comments, may be posted on the internet.
Prospective candidates were asked to submit confidential financial information to fully disclose, among other financial interests, the candidate's employment, stocks and bonds, and where applicable, sources of research support. EPA evaluated the candidates' financial disclosure forms to assess whether there are financial conflicts of interest, appearance of a loss of impartiality, or any prior involvement with the development of the documents under consideration (including previous scientific peer review) before the candidates were considered further.
The public comment period follows a June 2023 call for nominations of scientific and technical experts to review the white paper.
