Public Notice: EPA Proposes to Change Lead Cleanup Levels for Homes in Colorado Smelter Superfund Site

Summary
EPA is proposing to modify the existing remedy for the Colorado Smelter Superfund site. EPA is proposing to lower the lead cleanup levels for the site:
- soil level from 350 ppm to 240 ppm,
- indoor dust level from 275 ppm to 110 ppm.
The proposed remedy change also proposes that homes will only receive an indoor cleanup if there are
- elevated indoor dust concentrations above the cleanup level and
- the resident requests a remediation.
Why is EPA Proposing Action?
Nationwide EPA released new lead screening level guidance in 2025. This action is the result of EPA’s work evaluating how to implement this directive. Once finalized, EPA anticipates additional cleanup work beginning as soon as possible.
Public Comment Period
Submit your comments by October 1, 2026. After the comment period ends, EPA will review all public comments and issue a responsiveness summary.
