Canned and Preserved Fruits and Vegetables Effluent Guidelines

EPA promulgated the Canned and Preserved Fruits and Vegetables Effluent Guidelines and Standards (40 CFR Part 407) in 1974 and 1976. The regulation covers direct dischargersdirect dischargerA point source that discharges pollutants to waters of the United States, such as streams, lakes, or oceans.. The Effluent Guidelines and Standards are incorporated into NPDES permits.

What is the Canned and Preserved Fruits and Vegetables Industry?

The industry comprises facilities packing a wide variety of fruit and vegetable products, including apples, potatoes, citrus fruits, vegetables and specialty foods.

Fruit and vegetable canning or packaging plants are included within the following North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) groups:
