EPA-EIA Crosswalk
The Clean Air and Power Division (CAPD) of EPA and the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) both collect substantial amounts of information about EGUs and maintain robust datasets covering facility attributes, operation, and emissions. The methodology to match the different unit IDs is available in R script and the results are available as a spreadsheet (xlsx) and delimited text file (csv).

eGRID PM2.5, NH3, and VOC
eGRID uses data from both EPA's Clean Air and Power Division (CAPD) and the Energy Information Administration (EIA) to determine carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOX), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and mercury (Hg) emissions. Neither CAPD nor EIA collect data specifically on PM2.5 emissions. However, EPA’s National Emissions Inventory (NEI) is a source of PM2.5 emissions data. The annual emissions of air pollutants, including PM2.5, from most electric generating units are reported to the NEI.
EPA uses the NEI data to determine PM2.5 emissions at electric generating units. The paper below discusses the methods used to determine PM2.5 emissions and emission rates, including steps to estimate emissions for units that may not report to the NEI. Additionally, the data file below presents unit-level estimates of PM2.5 emissions and emission rates, as well as emissions and emission rates at the state and eGRID subregion levels for 2018 through 2021.
EPA is considering whether to incorporate PM2.5 in future eGRID releases, and is requesting feedback on the methodology and data. Please email your feedback, questions, and suggestions to johnson.travis@epa.gov.
2021
Ammonia (NH3) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) data is new for 2021. It was developed using the same approach used for PM2.5.
