Indiana Harbor Canal Feasibility Study
EPA and project partners have completed the feasibility study evaluating options for remediating sediments with PCBs at or above 50 parts per million (ppm) in the Indiana Harbor Canal. EPA’s Great Lakes National Program Office partnered with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and ArcelorMittal to perform an evaluation of remedial alternatives to address PCB-contaminated TSCA sediment in the Indiana Harbor Canal.
The study evaluated cleanup alternatives, including off-site disposal of sediments with >50 ppm PCBs sediment, as well as a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers led alternative with disposal in the confined disposal facility. For all alternatives, deeper sediment would be capped in place.
EPA and IDEM agree that the only feasible option for removal of sediments with >50 ppm PCBs is for the Corps of Engineers to dredge the material and dispose of the sediment in the confined disposal facility.
