Executive Order (E.O.) 13859 - Maintaining American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence - was issued in 2019. Its purpose is to establish federal principles and strategies to strengthen the nation's capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI) to promote scientific discovery, economic competitiveness, and national security.

The Office of Management and Budget issued guidance to agencies in November 2020 to provide guidance on the development of regulatory and non-regulatory approaches to technologies and industrial sectors that may use or be improved by use of AI. EPA Response to OMB Memorandum M-21-06 (docx) (34.31 KB, August 2021) provides information about the agency's plan for use of artificial intelligence applications.
