Webinar: Don’t Waste the Heat!
On September 28, 2021, LMOP hosted a webinar with three speakers providing information about uses of waste heat from landfill gas (LFG) energy projects. The presentations were followed by a question-and-answer session.
The presentation slides are provided below in a PDF file as well as a recording of the webinar.
Heartland Water Technology has partnered with landfill operators to beneficially use waste heat from LFG energy plants to evaporate leachate in traditional CoVAP™ cogeneration applications. Captured LFG drives a combustion engine to generate electricity and the engine exhaust provides the thermal energy necessary to treat landfill leachate. Renewable energy project developer Energy Power Partners (EPP) described how landfill operators can reduce leachate management costs and LFG energy plant operators can improve system efficiency and generate additional value for their customers. In the presentation, Heartland and EPP looked at leachate flow rates, the relationship to engine sizing and LFG usage, improvements to overall system efficiency and the positive impacts which are possible with a CoVAP™ solution.
Utilizing an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) for LFG flare elimination is an often-overlooked method of converting LFG to power. ElectraTherm’s presentation discussed the equipment requirements and benefits of the ORC process specifically for LFG. Since common ORC systems operate off hot water the gas is consumed in a boiler to generate hot water for the ORC. The ORC is not in contact with the LFG so maintenance requirements and costs are very low. Boilers specifically designed for LFG applications are much less sensitive to impurities and contaminants than traditional power generation equipment such as engines and turbines. Controlled boiler combustion reduces emissions significantly over those of an open flare. Furthermore, some ORC technologies can operate at 10 percent rated output which allows them to operate through significant fluctuations in LFG quality and flow rate. Modular, scalable systems allow for even more swing in output. An example case using LMOP data illustrated the capabilities of ORC systems coupled with LFG boilers.
Speakers:
Steve Gabrielle | Partner | Energy Power Partners (EPP) – Steve has 30 years of comprehensive utility and energy experience. As a Partner with EPP he develops new business and investments. He is also President of EPP Service Company which operates and maintains all of EPP's projects including LFG, digester gas, solar, wind and microgrid projects across the United States.
Casey Cammann | Chief Marketing Officer | Heartland Water Technology, Inc – Casey has more than 20 years of experience growing businesses and brings a wide range of marketing and business development experience to the Heartland team. He helps Heartland partner with landfills to beneficially use waste heat from LFG energy plants to evaporate leachate.
Jessie Howell | Sales Manager North America | ElectraTherm – Jessie joined ElectraTherm in 2020. He spent eight years in the combined heat and power industry specializing in high-efficiency, low-emission reciprocating engine applications and waste heat recovery. Jessie believes in the value of waste heat-to-power and renewables for future sustainability and grid resiliency. He highlighted the advantages of low-temperature waste heat-to-power and gas-to-power and how these can be an integral part of reducing our carbon footprint and utilizing LFG.
