The Gateway Plating Superfund Site is located in St. Louis, Missouri, at 2501 Texas Avenue. It is at the corner of Texas Avenue and Victor Street in the Fox Park neighborhood. The facility is the site of an abandoned industrial metal plating facility. It covers approximately 0.6 acres in a mixed residential and industrial urban area, and is composed of a series of dilapidated interconnected buildings that cover approximately two-thirds of the site. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources referred the site to EPA in 2021. EPA worked closely with DeSales Community Development throughout assessment and the removal action.

Assessments performed by EPA in 2021 found approximately 100 containers and 20 open vats in the facility. Sampling from these containers identified caustic solids, acidic solids and liquids, and basic liquids present at the site. These wastes are hazardous substances.

During the spring and summer of 2022, EPA performed a cleanup at the site. This included characterizing and bulking waste streams in preparation for off-site disposal. In July 2022, all wastes were transported off-site for disposal. This completed all planned cleanup work for the site.

What is Superfund?

Superfund often refers to hazardous waste sites and EPA’s cleanup process. It is the common name for the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). This federal law authorizes EPA to clean up contaminated sites.

Contaminants of Concern

The primary contaminants of concern at the site were containerized corrosive and toxic hazardous substances. Corrosive and toxic wastes present a threat to human health and the environment.
