Recycletronics-G Street Superfund Site, South Sioux City, Dakota County, Nebraska – Fact Sheet, July 2022
Site Update
About the Site
The Recycletronics-G Street Superfund Site encompasses an area of abandoned and broken cathode ray tube (CRT) glass in a commercial business parking lot at 2301 G Street, South Sioux City, Nebraska. Samples taken by EPA Region 7’s Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Enforcement Program indicate that lead is leaching from the pile of CRT glass and contaminating the nearby environment. The Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (NDEE) referred the site to EPA Region 7’s Superfund Program in August 2021.
To clean up the site, EPA will transport the CRT glass to a hazardous waste management facility for disposal. Any affected soil, as well as other wastes identified during the removal, will be characterized and treated or disposed of appropriately. Work will begin in June 2022 and is expected to last three to five weeks.
What is Superfund?
Superfund often refers to hazardous waste sites and EPA’s cleanup process. It is the common name for the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA). This federal law authorizes EPA to clean up contaminated sites.
What is Lead?
Lead contamination at Superfund sites presents a threat to human health and the environment. Lead is a naturally occurring element. However, most lead found in the environment is due to human activity. Lead can be harmful to humans, especially children, if people come in contact with it. A person can come in contact with lead through ingesting (eating or drinking) something with lead in it or through inhaling (breathing) lead dust. Over time, lead has become a common contaminant at Superfund sites.
Learn more about lead. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) has a series of summaries about contaminants, called ToxFAQs, where you can find one on lead.
