The Healthy Communities Grant Program is EPA New England's main competitive grant program to work directly with communities to reduce environmental risks to protect and improve human health and the quality of life. The Healthy Communities Grant Program will achieve this through identifying and funding projects that:
- Target resources to benefit communities at risk [areas needing to create community resilience, areas of potential concern, sensitive populations (e.g., children, elderly, tribes, urban and rural residents, and others at increased risk)].
- Assess, understand, and reduce environmental and human health risks.
- Increase collaboration through partnerships and community-based projects.
- Build institutional and community capacity to understand and solve environmental and human health problems.
- Achieve measurable environmental and human health benefits.
To qualify as eligible projects under the Healthy Communities Grant Program, proposed projects must: (1) be located in and/or directly benefit one or more of the Target Investment Areas; and (2) identify how the proposed project will achieve measurable environmental and/or public health results in one or more of the Target Program Areas. 2024 Healthy Communities Grant Program Request for Applications (pdf)
Applications for the 2024 Healthy Communities Grant Program are due November 1, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. ET. Entities eligible to receive Healthy Communities funding include state and local governments, public and private nonprofit institutions/organizations, federally recognized Indian Tribal governments, K-12 schools or school districts, and grassroots and community-based organizations. Applicants are not required to be located in New England but must propose projects that affect the states, Tribes, and territories within the region.

A note to all applicants: The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has published updates to the Uniform Grants Guidance (2 CFR 200), applicable to all federal assistance agreements, that have gone into effect for all grants awarded on or after October 1, 2024. All Healthy Communities awards made on or after this date will be subject to the revised regulations. Healthy Communities applicants should familiarize themselves with the changes to 2 CFR 200 as they prepare their applications. Applicants can also access slides and a recording from an EPA webinar on the changes hosted October 9, 2024.
Information Sessions
Please join us for one of four virtual information sessions hosted by EPA Region 1 on the Healthy Communities grant competition. These sessions will provide attendees with information about the open opportunity, including an overview of the application process, details on applicant eligibility, and other considerations for preparing a project proposal. Prospective applicants are encouraged to attend only one session, as all four webinars will deliver the same content.
