EPA Grants Nearly $1.5 Million to Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas for Tribal Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling
DALLAS, TEXAS (July 29, 2026) – Today, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced $1,499,066 for Tribes and Intertribal Consortia through the Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling (SWIFR) grant program in Texas. EPA selected the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas to receive the grant funding.
“These grants further energize our American economy by improving recycling, cutting disposal costs, reducing waste in landfills and extending landfill life, and creating good paying local jobs,” said Acting Assistant Administrator for Land and Emergency Management Thomas Croci. “By improving tribal recycling infrastructure EPA supports the recovery of domestic sources of raw materials, local economies and provides tangible health benefits to communities across Indian Country.”
“The SWIFR program accomplishes many goals by engaging local economies to reduce waste and increase the amount and types of materials that can be recycled,” said Regional Administrator Scott Mason. “Tribes leverage these funds to invest inand improve their communities, steward their resources and protect the environment.”
The goal of the SWIFR grants is to improve local waste management systems, meeting Congress’ goal to create a stronger, more resilient, and cost-effective U.S. municipal solid waste recycling system.
The Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas will upgrade its solid waste operations and facilities to establish a hub-and-spoke materials management center. The project will create drop-off stations and construct a central processing station as well as procure heavy equipment and machinery to ensure safe and efficient facilities operations. Coupled with community outreach and engagement, the project aims to reduce landfill dependency, illegal dumping, and open burning, resulting in cleaner air, water, and land for the community.
By sponsoring a more efficient and robust solid waste management system in Tribal communities, these grants reduce the burden on landfill capacity, increase valuable materials for end-markets, establish collection services and composting programs, create new jobs, and improve quality of life.
