EPA Proposes Next Step in Chemsol Groundwater Cleanup in Piscataway, New Jersey
New York, N.Y. - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposing the next step in the cleanup of the Chemsol, Inc. Superfund site in Piscataway, New Jersey, with a plan to address contaminated groundwater that has moved beyond the former Chemsol, Inc. facility’s property. The proposed plan relies on natural processes to reduce contamination over time, along with institutional controls and long-term monitoring to prevent exposure and track cleanup progress.
“EPA’s proposed plan is an important next step in the long-term cleanup of the Chemsol, Inc. Superfund site,” said EPA Regional Administrator Michael Martucci. “EPA is using long-term monitoring and controls to protect the Piscataway community while we continue addressing groundwater contamination linked to the site.”
The Chemsol, Inc. site is a former solvent recovery and waste reprocessing facility where past industrial activities contaminated soil, sediment, and groundwater. EPA has overseen decades of cleanup work at the site, including the removal of contaminated soil and sediment and the ongoing treatment of contaminated groundwater beneath the former reprocessing facility.
This proposed plan focuses on residual contaminated groundwater that moved beyond the former Chemsol, Inc. facility’s property before the existing cleanup controls were in place. EPA’s proposed plan would address the off-site groundwater contamination through monitored natural processes that reduce contamination over time, with controls in place that help prevent people from being exposed to contaminated groundwater and long-term monitoring to track cleanup progress.
Homes and businesses near the site are connected to public water, which is secure and sampled under the Safe Drinking Water Act. EPA’s proposed plan is designed to prevent exposure to contaminated groundwater while EPA continues monitoring conditions over time.
EPA is accepting public comments on the proposed plan for 30 days, beginning August 13, 2026, and ending September 11, 2026.
