Pollution Prevention Grant: Environmental Justice Through Safer and More Sustainable Products

Funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the purpose of the Pollution Prevention Grant: Environmental Justice Through Safer and more Sustainable Products is to provide pollution prevention (P2) technical assistance to businesses (e.g., information, training, expert advice) in order to improve human health and the environment in disadvantaged communities by increasing the supply, demand and use of safer and more sustainable products, such as those that are certified by EPA’s Safer Choice program, or those that conform to EPA’s Recommendations for Specifications, Standards and Ecolabels for Federal Purchasing (Recommendations).

Greater availability and use of safer and more sustainable products can reduce harmful chemical exposures and their impacts on human health and the environment in disadvantaged communities.

P2 Grant Highlights

Highlight: Portland State University’s (pdf) Community Environmental Services unit and its Institute on Tribal Governance, and partners, will assist Native-owned and Native-serving businesses to reduce the use of chemicals, improve workplace environmental health, and increase the use of EPA preferred products, including Safer Choice–certified products.


P2 grant ceremony in Hawaii

Highlight: University of Hawaiʻi (pdf) Sea Grant College Program’s project will provide technical assistance to businesses that make or serve food in Hilo, Hawaiʻi, to establish a safe, affordable, community-wide reusable foodware system. The proposed project will improve human health and the environment in disadvantaged communities by decreasing plastic waste and reducing human exposure to chemicals of concern in Hilo, Hawaiʻi.

FY 2023- FY 2024 Pollution Prevention Grant: Environmental Justice Through Safer and More Sustainable Products

The application period closed on June 20, 2023.

Funding Amount $8 million to be awarded in 2023. Individual grant awards may range from $100,000 to $800,000 for the funding period, or up to $1.2 million for multi-state or multi-tribal projects. EPA will fund awards in the form of grants or cooperative agreements under the authority of the PPA Section 6605.

Eligibility States, state entities (colleges and universities recognized as instrumentalities of the state), the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, any territory or possession of the U.S., and federally recognized Tribes and intertribal consortia.
