EPA Vision for Participatory Science

What is EPA's Vision?

As an Agency, we are taking a strategic approach to using participatory science projects to strengthen environmental protection. As outlined in the vision below, EPA will work to build capacity for community-based participatory science. We will also help scientists work more effectively with communities to address the most pressing environmental problems.

Vision Statement: EPA envisions a future where all parts of society are increasingly engaged and empowered to help advance scientific knowledge that informs environmental protection actions on local, regional, and national scales. In this vision, participatory science projects will provide accessible, actionable information that improves environmental awareness and decision making.

EPA Vision for Participatory Science:

  • Participatory Science represents the most inclusive and accessible involvement of the public in scientific research.

Participatory science can:

  •  Fill information gaps and provide other means of identifying potential environmental problems.
  • Improve public understanding of environmental issues and actions to address them.
  • Create a stronger, more inclusive, and collaborative network of individuals and organizations dedicated to environmental problem solving.
  • Yield cost-savings and efficiencies in environmental monitoring and protection programs.

Goals:

  • Develop cooperative, mutually beneficial relationships with communities.
  • Work with Tribal Nations to support use of participatory science and traditional ecological knowledge (TEK).
  • Work alongside communities to implement projects that address community priorities and environmental justice concerns.
