Summary

EPA is conducting a five-year review of the Fultz Landfill Superfund site, at Interstate 77 and Vocational Road near Byesville, in Guernsey County, Ohio. The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up or where cleanup has been ongoing for at least five years – with waste managed on-site – to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment. This is the sixth five-year review of this site.

EPA’s cleanup at the site consisted of placing a berm and multilayer cap to reduce water infiltration and minimize contact with contaminated materials; establishing a collection system for landfill liquid, or leachate; constructing an extraction well system to catch contaminated groundwater; long-term monitoring; and limiting the use of and access to the site.

More information is available on the Fultz Landfill site webpage. The review is expected to be completed in June of 2027.

The five-year review is an opportunity for you to tell EPA about site conditions and any concerns you have.
