Summary

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in consultation with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, is conducting a review of the Garden City Superfund site located in Garden City, Indiana. The Superfund law requires a review at least every five years at sites where the cleanup is complete and waste is managed onsite to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment.

The site covers nearly 3.5 acres at the intersection of Jonesville Road and Garden Street. In 1989, the state sampled drinking water in homes and businesses in the area after receiving a report of petroleum odors in drinking water. Sampling results showed contamination petroleum and chlorinated chemical contamination, including benzene, toluene, and trichloroethene, above Safe Drinking Water Act levels.

EPA’s cleanup of contamination at the site included treating contaminated groundwater with granular activated carbon, groundwater monitoring, and deed restrictions. Wellhead treatment systems are replaced annually until trichloroethene concentrations are below the Maximum Contaminant Levels. This is the first five-year review for this site, and it should be completed by September 2026.

More information will be made available online at the Cleo Rogers Memorial Library, 536 Fifth St, Columbus and at Garden City Groundwater webpage.

The Five-Year Review is an opportunity for you to tell EPA about site conditions and any concerns you have.
