Summary

EPA is proposing to approve a plan modification for the closure of a former shooting range at the Highland Mountain Correctional Center located in Eagle River, Alaska.

The former shooting range was operated by the Alaska Department of Corrections from 1980 to 1998. The Department of Corrections requested a modification to their existing approved closure plan based on new information found during closure activities. EPA is proposing to approve the modification to ensure the closure remains protective of human health and the environment.

The closure is required under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act to remove lead-impacted soil and bullet/lead fragments to minimize potential exposure to human health and the environment.

The public comment period allows the submittal of written comments on the plan and request modifications.
