Public Notices of Lead Exceedances in Local Water Systems in the Pacific Southwest
EPA recently issued notices to inform people that testing conducted by their local water system showed lead levels exceeding lead action level in some homes and/or buildings. When samples are found above this measure (0.015mg/L), it indicates that the water system may need to adjust treatment or replace lead pipes.
As required by the Safe Drinking Water Act An Act passed by the US Congress in 1974. The Act establishes a cooperative program among local, state and federal agencies to insure safe drinking water for consumers. (SDWA), EPA is notifying communities of lead action level exceedances when a water system fails to provide a timely notice. EPA’s notice includes important information to protect public health, including potential health effects and what actions people can take to reduce their exposure. EPA intends to work with water systems and states to ensure they are taking any actions required as a result of the exceedance, including the requirement to provide timely public notice to all persons served by the water system.
For actions EPA recommends people take if they are concerned about lead in drinking water, the public can visit Important Steps You Can Take to Reduce Lead in Drinking Water and/or contact your local water system and health department.
