Summary

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is conducting a five-year review of the National Presto Industries Superfund site. The 320-acre site is mostly in Chippewa County with a small portion located along the northern border of Eau Claire County. The village of Lake Hallie is located north and east of the site, while the city of Eau Claire is located south and west of the site. Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up – with waste managed on-site – to ensure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment. This is the seventh five-year review of this site.

Cleanup of the volatile organic compound contamination at the site consisted of the following:

  • Constructing a permanent community water supply system
  • Installing groundwater extraction wells
  • Excavating waste forge compounds
  • Installing soil vapor extraction systems
  • Pumping and treating contaminated ground water
  • Monitoring groundwater

More information can be accessed using the computers at the Chippewa Falls Public Library, 105 W Central St, Chippewa Falls, WI 54729, and at National Presto Industries webpage. The review should be completed by Fall of 2026.
