Old North St. Louis: Sustainably Developing a Historic District
Old North St. Louis, a neighborhood in St. Louis, Missouri, is located less than 1 mile north of downtown. Beginning in the 1950s, this once-thriving neighborhood has experienced decades of disinvestment and abandonment, resulting in an excess of building and lots.
Considering the neighborhood's ideal location and abundance of potential, in 2015 the city of St. Louis requested EPA technical assistance to develop a vision for the neighborhood that would guide new growth and development, while protecting, preserving, and rehabilitating its historic character. The vision was also intended to incorporate environmentally sustainable features to enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors.
In response, EPA assembled a team of consultants to help develop overall neighborhood strategies and design options based on city, resident, and stakeholder goals. The neighborhood's nonprofit revitalization organization, Old North St. Louis Restoration Group, hosted a three-day workshop to engage residents, stakeholders, city officials, business owners, and community members to refine goals and explore options for redevelopment.
The resulting report, Old North St. Louis: Sustainably Developing a Historic District, documents the outcome of that process and provides a comprehensive vision for sustainably redeveloping Old North St. Louis.
