BenMAP Downloads

Below you will find the current and legacy versions of the environmental Benefits Mapping and Analysis Program. BenMAP-CE is free and open source software, and the source code is available upon request. Please Contact Us:

  • If you would like a copy of the source code.
  • If you are interested in receiving periodic e-mails from EPA alerting you to a new version of BenMAP.
  • If you have other questions about the downloads.

Current Version

BenMAP-Community Edition v1.5 (September 2023) - This is the current public release version of the BenMAP-CE software. Follow this link to find an installation package, the configuration files you need to estimate the health impacts and economic value of fine particle and ozone-related premature deaths and illnesses and a quick-start guide. A current version of the configuration and aggregating, pooling and valuing files PM2.5 and ozone may be found here:  Ozone & PM Config Files (September 2023) (zip) .

BenMAP in the Cloud (May 2024) - This version of the environmental Benefits Mapping and Analysis Program operates via a web page. Follow this link to learn more about this new version, perform an analysis and review the user manual.

Legacy Versions

  • FTP site - Past versions of cloud-based BenMAP as well as BenMAP-CE are available here.  To run the cloud version, users will need to install VirtualBox to run the cloud-based BenMAP software on their own computers.  Please see instructions in "BenMap VirtualBox Setup.docx".  The files to replicate the cloud version are large.
  • BenMAP 4.0 (January 2013) - This legacy version of the BenMAP software (BenMAP v4.0.66) was used for the 2012 PM NAAQS Regulatory Impact Analysis. Both BenMAP v4.0.66 and the current version contain 2010 census data and address a number of bugs. Note that current versions of the configuration and aggregation, pooling and valuation files are not bundled in the installation package and may be downloaded separately. Version 4.0.67 is a minor update from v4.0.66 (December 2012), with the only change being the inclusion of the CMAQ 36km grid definition.
  • BenMAP 1.0 - This legacy version of BenMAP that was used in developing the regulatory benefits analyses for the Nonroad Diesel and Clean Air Interstate rules. This version of the model is designed for regional and national-scale analyses within the continental United States, and uses a fixed set of population data and air quality model grid definitions. Download time for this version is significant due to the large databases which support the analyses.

Data

Some data are available for download outside of the BenMAP application.  Those will be linked here.

Importing AQS Data into BenMAP-CE

If you would like to procure and process air quality data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (USEPA’s) Air Quality System (AQS) for use in the Agency’s Environmental Benefits Mapping and Analysis Program-Community Edition (BenMAP-CE), please download the below R script and follow these steps:

  • Download the daily summary O3 (AQS Parameter Code 44201) and/or PM2.5 (AQS Parameter Code 88101) file(s) of interest from the AQS website (https://www.epa.gov/aqs)
  • Store each file in a single zip folders as either (1) the original .zip folders or (2) unzipped .csv files.
  • Open the script and update the line of code that points to the directory containing the raw AQS data (line 24)
  • Run the R script from either the freeware application RStudio (recommended), the R graphical user interface, or the Windows command prompt
  • Open BenMAP-CE and click on the Edit button in the Manage Monitor Datasets window
  • Type the data year into the  Year field on the Monitor Dataset Definition window and click the Load Data From File button
  • Once a monitor file has been selected, click the Validate button in the Load Monitor Dataset window
  • Click the OK button to exit the Validating Data Import window and the newly entered monitor file should appear in the Manage Monitor Datasets Window
  • Repeat the last three steps until all years of AQS data have been imported into BenMAP-CE
