Dioxin at Superfund Sites

Dioxin is commonly found at hazardous waste sites, including sites on EPA’s National Priority List, for which the cleanup is managed under EPA’s Superfund program. EPA has information to help assessors of Superfund sites characterize soil contaminated with dioxins.

Specifically, EPA provides:

• the toxicity reference dose (RfD) for the most toxic form, 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD),
• recommended 2,3,7,8-TCDD toxicity equivalence factors (TEFs) for the other forms of dioxin that might be found in the environment. [TEFs also are known as toxicity equivalent (TEQ) values.], and
• answers to questions frequently asked by Superfund project managers and links to technical documents about sampling and analysis of dioxin-contaminated soils.
