ICIS-NPDES Search User Guide
This guide explains how to use the ICIS-NPDES Search in Envirofacts to find facilities and permit information regulated under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES).
The search lets you filter by facility identifiers, geography, industry classification, parameters, and dates. You can combine multiple filters to narrow results. Using more than one option usually returns the most relevant results.

Open the ICIS-NPDES Search
- Go to https://enviro.epa.gov/envirofacts/icis-npdes/search.
- Use a modern browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox). The tool does not support Internet Explorer.
Facility Identification
Facility Name
Enter a complete or partial facility name. If you aren’t sure of the exact name, start with part of the name (e.g., “City of Springfield”) to return more matches.
NPDES ID
Enter a complete or partial NPDES ID (e.g., “VA002” or the full 9-character ID). Use an exact ID when you want a specific facility; partial IDs are useful when the last characters vary.
Geography
You can filter by one or more of the following:
- ZIP Code: five-digit ZIP; ZIP+4 is also accepted.
- Address: complete or partial street address.
- City and/or County (with state).
- State: Select a State from the dropdown list.
Tip: Start broad (state or county) and add more detail (city or ZIP) if you get too many results.
Industry Classification
SIC Code
Use a 4-digit Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code. For broader searches, enter the first 2–3 digits. If available, you can also search by keyword in the facility name to approximate an industry (e.g., “water,” “meat,” “paper”).
Parameter (Chemical) Filters
Parameter Code
If you know the parameter code, enter it directly. Otherwise, use the tool’s parameter lookup (when available) or search by name.
Parameter Name
Enter a complete or partial parameter/chemical name (e.g., “Ammonia,” “Total Suspended Solids”). Using common names usually returns results; you can refine later if you get too many.
Permit Dates
Permit Issued Date and Permit Expiration Date
Enter a date range to find permits issued or expiring within specific periods. If you enter a single date, the system will return results for that date only.
Search Values Option
Select Use Multisystem facility information to perform facility search to identify facilities using facility information from all program systems. Select Use ICIS-NPDES facility information only to perform facility search to identify facilities using only ICIS-NPDES facility information.
Run the Search
- Select your filters.
- Click Search.
- If you get many results, add another filter (e.g., city, ZIP, or part of the NPDES ID) and search again.

Usage Constraints
Information in ICIS-NPDES is publicly accessible through this search. Very large queries may time out; refine your filters to retrieve smaller result sets. Close the session when finished so others can access the system.
