TRI Pollution Prevention Search User Guide

Use the TRI Pollution Prevention (P2) Search to explore reported source reduction (P2) activities, optional narrative descriptions, and waste management trends by industry, chemical, year, state, and parent company.

On this page

  • Quick Start
  • Industry (NAICS) Selection
  • Chemical Selection
  • Year Selection
  • State Selection
  • Parent Company Selection
  • Report Options
  • P2 Activities Results
  • P2 Details Report
  • Facility Comparison Report
  • Usage Notes

Go to the tool: Open TRI Pollution Prevention (P2) Search (opens in a new window) .

Quick Start

  • Select one or more search criteria. Year is required.
  • Select Show P2 info for facilities or Show P2 info for parent companies.
  • Choose a Report: Show P2 Activities (table of facilities/activities) or Facility Comparison (compare facilities for a chemical/industry/year).
  • Use Additional Filters on the results to include only source-reduction text entries or show barriers to P2.
  • Select P2 Details for any facility–chemical to see site info, trend graphs, and reported activities.

Industry (NAICS) Selection

The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code identifies the type of business activity at a facility or establishment. All Industry Sectors is the default selection. Refine the search by selecting one or more 3–4 digit and/or 6 digit NAICS codes.

NAICS code granularity (example)

NAICS code granularity example
DigitsExample NAICSDefinition / Granularity
3311xxxFood Manufacturing
43115xxDairy Products
6311511Fluid Milk

Chemical Selection

The default selection is "All Chemicals," defined as all reportable chemicals in a selected year. You can pick one or more chemicals, search by CAS number, or choose a predefined Chemical Group (for example, Hazardous Air Pollutants or Metals & Metal Compounds). For more results, use one of the selections under the Commonly Searched Chemicals header or select a Chemical Group; many of the other selections may return few or no results.

  • View list of Hazardous Air Pollutants (opens in a new window)
  • View OSHA carcinogens list (opens in a new window)
  • View Metals and metal compounds list (opens in a new window)
  • View CERCLA Hazardous Substances list (opens in a new window)
  • View Persistent, Bioaccumulative, and Toxic (PBT) chemicals list (opens in a new window)

Year Selection

The date range option is the default selection, or select one or more reporting years for which the data are reported. Note: Pollution prevention text entries—Form R Section 8.11—are available electronically beginning in 2005 reporting year; for earlier years, the only results returned will be source reduction activity codes reported in Section 8.10 of the Form R. 1991 is the first year for which any pollution prevention information is available.

State Selection

All States is the default selection. Choose one or more states/territories from the dropdown to refine your search. Use this reference if needed:

Parent Company Selection

The Parent Company selection option is added when the “Show P2 info for parent companies” criteria is selected. Default is All Parent Companies. If this is selected, you will see the option to “Display Parent Company Comparison” for your selected criteria (e.g., visually compare how different parent companies in an industry manage the same chemical). Selecting a single parent company enables the “Compare Facilities for Selected Company” option (e.g., to see how different facilities in the selected company manage TRI chemicals). Only parent companies that have more than one TRI facility are included in the dropdown. Parent companies are grouped using EPA’s standardized parent company name to support consistent aggregation.

Report Options

  • Show P2 Activities — Lists facilities that reported P2 activity codes (Section 8.10) and/or narrative text (Section 8.11) for your criteria.
  • Facility Comparison — Compares facilities’ production-related waste management quantities and trends for the selected industry/chemical/year.

P2 Activities Results

Results list EPA-regulated facilities that reported P2 information for the selected criteria. A facility may appear in multiple rows if it reported for multiple chemicals or years.

Columns you’ll see

  • Facility Name
  • Address (Street, City, State, ZIP)
  • Chemical Name
  • Industry (NAICS) (hidden if a single industry is selected)
  • Year (hidden if a single year is selected)
  • Prior Year Release and Current Year Release (units: pounds; dioxin in grams)
  • Percent Change (negative values indicate reductions; “∞” if prior year is zero)
  • P2 Activity Codes (Section 8.10) and/or P2 Text (Section 8.11)

Additional filters

  • Only show information about source reduction activities (default) — excludes Section 8.11 entries that EPA has classified as unrelated to source reduction.
  • Show information about source reduction AND environmental practices — displays facilities that have reported information in either Section 8.10 or 8.11 of their TRI Form R submission (excluding miscellaneous information submitted in Section 8.11 but not related to P2).
  • Exclude facilities that reported activity codes but no text descriptions — excludes facilities that did not enter information in Section 8.11 of the TRI Form R.
  • Show information on barriers to implementing source reduction activities — shows information facilities provided on barriers they face in implementing additional source reduction, recycling, or pollution control activities.
  • Show ALL information reported in pollution prevention data fields — includes all entries submitted in Section 8.11, even those that EPA has classified as unrelated to P2.

Value for year-to-year comparison

Change the comparison metric to focus on specific media. Comparison column headers update accordingly and can be moused over for a brief description or clicked on to go to the metadata page.

  • Total Waste (Form R Sections 8.1–8.7 total)
  • Total Release (default; Form R Section 8.1a–d)
  • Air Release (Form R Sections 5.1 & 5.2)
  • Land Release (Form R Sections 5.4 & 5.5)
  • Water Release (Form R Section 5.3)

P2 Details Report

The P2 Details report provides site information, production-related waste management trend graphs, and a table of the facility’s P2 activities for the selected chemical.

Site information includes

  • Facility ID and Facility Name
  • Address (Street, City, State, ZIP)
  • Parent Company
  • Industry (NAICS)
  • Chemical (switch chemicals via the “P2 data for other chemicals” dropdown)
  • Links to find more P2 activities for this industry/chemical and to view TRI Form R submissions

Production-related waste management trends

  • Waste Management Trends — yearly quantities; options to display totals only, show production index, normalize by production, show % of total, and (where available) display GHGRP-reported GHG emissions.
  • Waste Management Comparison — compare Recycled, Energy Recovery, Treated, and Released amounts at the facility versus industry totals for the chosen year.

Pollution Prevention Activities table (by year)

  • Reporting Year
  • Section 8.10: Newly Implemented Source Reduction Activity
  • Section 8.10: Methods to Identify Activity
  • Section 8.11: Optional Pollution Prevention Information (narrative text)

Facility Comparison Report

The Facility Comparison Report displays each facility's waste management quantities and trends for a selected industry, chemical, and year. The default report shows a Production-Related Waste Managed Graph and a Production-Related Waste Trend Graph. The Production-Related Waste Managed Graph options include Display Waste Quantities, Display waste quantities as a percentage of total waste, Display GHG Emissions Reported to GHGRP, Display 5-Year Waste Trend, and Display 5-Year Waste Trend Normalized.

Notes on waste trend graph: Regardless of the year selected for the facility comparison report, the waste trend will be calculated for the most recent 5-year period. If data are unavailable, no value will be displayed.

Table columns

The Facility Comparison Report table contains the following fields (dependent on table option selected): Facility Name, Address (Street, City, State, ZIP), Latitude/Longitude, GHG Emissions (CO2e), 5-Year Waste Trend, 5-Year Waste Trend (Normalized), Recycled, Energy Recovery, Treated, Released.

Usage Notes

Searches that return very large result sets may time out. Narrow your criteria (e.g., limit years, add state or NAICS) and export results in smaller batches when needed.
