Overview

Anticipated Award Amount $2,961,556
Applicant The Snoqualmie Indian Tribe
Application Title Snoqualmie Tribe Ancestral Forest Carbon Reduction and Climate Resilient Forestry Project
Sector Agriculture and Natural and Working Lands
Estimated GHG Reductions 1

Cumulative 2025‑2030:
6,600
metric tons CO2 equivalent

Cumulative 2025‑2050:
46,800
metric tons CO2 equivalent

Selected Application Summary

The selected application will support the Snoqualmie Tribe in implementing climate-smart forestry measures within their Ancestral Forest to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and mitigate the risk of catastrophic wildfires. Restoring healthy ecosystems in the Tribe’s Ancestral Forest will enhance the natural carbon sink and support many plant and animal species, including endangered, threatened, and culturally significant fish and wildlife. The selected application will fund comprehensive efforts to rejuvenate the Ancestral Forest and foster a resilient ecosystem by reforesting with native trees and plants, clearing brush and slashing along roads, thinning overstocked stands, and replanting a diverse mix of carbon-absorbing vegetation.

Key Things to Know

Based on information provided by the applicant, the selected project will deliver the following benefits to reduce GHGs and support communities 1:

  • Reduce the risk of forest fires through improved forestry management, resulting in the mitigation of hazardous air pollutants.
  • Increase workforce and economic development by creating job opportunities through project activities.
  • Improve ecosystem biodiversity and resilience to improve wildlife habitat, reduce erosion, and enhance water quality.
  • Reforest approximately 1,800 acres of overstocked or underplanted areas within the Ancestral Forest with native species to enhance carbon sequestration.

Activities and benefits summarized above reflect the measures in Snoqualmie Indian Tribe’s Priority Climate Action Plan (pdf) (0.6 MB).

1  The emission reduction estimates, as well as the descriptions of measures and benefits, were summarized from information provided by the applicant. These estimates, along with the award amount, are subject to change.

EPA will award grants to selected applicants once they meet all legal and administrative requirements. As of August 2024, grants are expected to be awarded by the end of 2024.
