Overview
The Inflation Reduction Act provides new authorities under the Clean Air Act to reduce methane emissions from the oil and gas sector through the creation of the Methane Emissions Reduction Program. As part of this program, EPA released a final rule on May 6, 2024 to strengthen, expand and update methane emissions reporting requirements for petroleum and natural gas systems under subpart W of EPA's Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program (GHGRP) to ensure greater transparency and accountability for methane pollution from oil and natural gas facilities by improving the accuracy of annual emissions reporting from these operations.
