Technician and Shop Owner Resources

Under Section 609 of the Clean Air Act, technicians servicing or repairing motor vehicle air conditioners (MVACs) for consideration (payment or bartering) must be properly trained and certified, use approved equipment, and follow specific regulatory practices.

    To be certified, technicians must be trained by an EPA-approved program and pass a test demonstrating their knowledge in these areas.

  • Certified Equipment

    Section 609 requires that technicians use refrigerant handling equipment that has been certified by the EPA or an independent standards testing organization approved by EPA to certify equipment.

  • Choosing and Using a Retrofit Refrigerant for a CFC-12 MVAC

    CFC-12 is an ozone-depleting refrigerant and potent greenhouse gas that was widely used in air conditioners for automobiles and trucks for over 30 years, up until the mid-1990s.
