Background on Methane
This video provides an overview of methane – what it is, where it comes from, and why it is important to reduce methane emissions. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that traps some of the Earth's outgoing energy, retaining heat in the atmosphere and altering climate and weather patterns. Methane is emitted from a variety of human-influenced and natural sources. This video was developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in support of voluntary activities to reduce methane emissions under the U.S. EPA’s Natural Gas STAR Program.

In an effort to promote technologies for remote sensing leak detection, this video was developed to highlight various leak detection technologies, including hand-held passive infrared cameras; infrared laser detectors; and aerial sensing-leak mapping systems. These technologies detect methane leaks that are invisible to the human eye and are powerful tools in identifying and reducing methane emissions.

Infrared (IR) Methane Videos
These videos were taken at various Natural Gas STAR Partner facilities using Infrared (IR) cameras to show leaking and fugitive emissions from various pieces of equipment. The videos highlight the importance of using an IR camera for leak detection because gas leaks are often invisible to the naked eye. The videos show “before and after” footage of a leak using a regular camera, followed by the same footage using an IR camera.
