Local Government Advisory Committee (LGAC)

The Local Government Advisory Committee (LGAC) is an independent, policy-oriented advisory committee that provides advice and recommendations to the EPA Administrator on critical environmental issues impacting local governments.

Chartered under the Federal Advisory Committee Act in 1993, the Committee is composed of elected and appointed officials from local, state, Tribal and territorial governments across the United States.  2025-2027 LGAC Charter (pdf) (134.11 KB)

EPA presents specific questions or charges to the LGAC for input, which are discussed by workgroups or the Small Communities Advisory Subcommittee. Once developed, recommendations are presented, discussed and voted on at public meetings.

LGAC Membership

The LGAC is comprised of elected and appointed officials from local, state, Tribal and territorial governments. This may include mayors, county executives, city managers, Tribal and territorial government leaders, commissioners and others that represent key interests of local governments. EPA typically solicits new members in the fall via the Federal Register. See a map of the current members.
