Information About EPA Map of Radon Zones

The Map of Radon Zones was developed in 1993 to identify areas of the U.S. with the greatest potential for elevated indoor radon levels based on indoor radon measurement data, geology, aerial radioactivity, soil parameters, and foundation types.

This map should not be used to determine if individual homes need to be tested. No matter where you live, test your home for radon—it’s easy and inexpensive. Fix your home if your radon level is 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L) (150 becquerels per cubic meter (Bq/m3))or higher. Consider fixing if your level is between 2 and 4 pCi/L (75 - 150 becquerels per cubic meter (Bq/m3)). The radon action level should comply with the guidance of the country, state, or other local jurisdiction of authority where the test is being conducted.

EPA's Map of Radon Zones can be supplemented with available state-developed or other data to further understand the radon potential for a specific area. Additional radon testing data may be accessed through the CDC Environmental Health Tracking Network, an online source for local, timely data from Tracking Program-funded states and six national radon testing laboratories.

Minnesota Dept. of Health Recommends:
1. Every Minnesota home, even those built radon-resistant, be tested for radon.
2. You should retest your home every 2 - 5 years and save your results.
3. Be sure to test before and after you make any major structural renovations such as building an addition or finishing a basement. Radon-resistant techniques can be inexpensively included as part of the renovation, if needed.
4. You should also perform a radon test after buying a new heating system or adding central air conditioning.
