EPA's Office of Research and Development (ORD) hosts this monthly public webinar series to translate EPA research and share research resources and information that are useful, practical/applied and available to meet stakeholders' research needs. In addition, the EPA Tools and Resources Training Webinar Series provides in-depth overviews and step-by-step tutorials on popular EPA science-based models and tools.

NOTE: Attendees have the option of receiving a certificate of attendance. Acceptance of certificates is contingent on organization requirements—EPA cannot guarantee acceptance. The generation of heat in a municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill is normal as microorganisms break down waste. Elevated temperature landfills (ETLFs) are MSW landfills that exhibit temperatures above regulatory thresholds (145° Fahrenheit) due to abnormal chemical reactions within the waste mass. These reactions can cause changes in landfill gas composition, noxious odors, rapid and severe waste settlement, leachate seeps and outbreaks, and generate strong leachate, all of which add to operator costs for facility management and can impact human health. For the previous two decades, EPA’s Office of Research and Development (ORD) along with multiple regional and state agencies have been encountering a number of landfills that come to be known as ETLFs.

ETLFs can often have similar symptoms as landfill fires, but the corrective actions to manage and mitigate the two are very different. This presentation will provide examples of different ETLFs and the different strategies used to manage or control the sub-surface reactions, the indicators or symptoms operators and regulators should be looking for, and identify some key questions that remain unanswered. ORD has developed webpages, fact sheets, and technical reports that can be resources for states and the public to better understand what ETLFs are what can be done to reduce the chances of a landfill from experiencing these reactions.
