Exceptional Events

EPA has finalized revisions to the 2007 Exceptional Events Rule. These revisions clarify the process states follow when deciding whether air quality monitoring data influenced by an “exceptional event” should be included when determining if an area is meeting national air quality standards. Exceptional events include natural events such as wildfires, stratospheric ozone intrusions and volcanic and seismic activities. Given the possible influence of wildfires on ozone concentrations, EPA also released final, non-binding guidance document that provides states with additional information on preparing exceptional events demonstrations for wildfires that could influence monitored ozone concentrations. A prepublication version of the notice, a fact sheet and the guidance are available at: Treatment of Air Quality Monitoring Data Influenced by Exceptional Events.

Final Lead NAAQS Decision

After carefully reviewing the most recent available scientific evidence, consulting with the Agency’s independent science advisors and considering comments from the public, EPA is retaining, without revision, the national ambient air quality standards for lead.  A fact sheet and the prepublication version of the notice is available at:  https://www.epa.gov/lead-air-pollution/national-ambient-air-quality-standards-naaqs-lead-pb.

General Permits and Permits by Rule for the Indian Country Minor New Source Review Program for Six Source Categories

This action finalizes general permits under the Indian Country Minor New Source Review (NSR) rule to streamline the minor source NSR permitting process, while ensuring the protection of air quality in Indian Country. EPA is providing general permits for new or modified minor sources in the following six source categories: (1) concrete batch plants; (2) boilers and emergency engines; (3) stationary spark ignition engines; (4) stationary compression ignition engines; (5) graphic arts and printing operations; and (6) sawmill facilities.  A fact sheet and the prepublication version of the notice are available at:  https://www.epa.gov/tribal-air/tribal-minor-new-source-review
