SmartWay Designated Tractors
Finding the right truck is critical to maximizing freight efficiency – using a SmartWay designated tractor and trailer can reduce fuel use by up to 20 percent 2,000 to 4,000 gallons of diesel per year!
SmartWay Tractors – in Both Sleeper and Day Cab Configurations
SmartWay tractors have been demonstrated to be the most fuel-efficient Class 8 models for long-haul and regional goods movement. SmartWay Tractors can be sleeper or day cab configurations. The required components of the SmartWay Designated Tractor are:

| Idle Reduction | Sleeper and day cabs must have automatic engine shut-off (AES) capability. For sleeper cabs, manufacturer availability of at least one option providing eight hours or more of engine idle-free auxiliary power, heat, and/or air conditioning using:

- All equipment must be maintained per manufacturer’s service recommendations and replaced when necessary.
- For model year 2014 and newer tractors, the tractor must be certified to applicable EPA GHG standards. For model year 2020 and older tractors, the tractor’s engine must be certified to applicable U.S. EPA emission standards appropriate for the model year tractor. For 2021 and newer tractors, the tractor is certified in combination with the diesel or alternatively fueled powertrain (certified engine, transmission, battery electric, fuel cell electric, hydrogen, and/or other systems).
