Building a Greenway: A case study

Case Study Overview

These interdisciplinary learning modules promote student discovery using available maps and data, engaging  students to be collaborative decision-makers. These case studies are intended for secondary education, undergraduate, and community education/engagement programs. The Greenway activity gives educators the option to assign stakeholder roles.

Instructional Video Walkthroughs

This video series walks students through the step-by-step process to complete either version of the Building a Greenway lesson. 

  • Video 1: Introduces students to the case study and discusses decision making in various contexts.
  • Video 2: Introduces students to map concepts, the Student Map Set, and how to access the maps in the Interactive Map.
  • Video 3: Outlines the decision making process, the roles stakeholders may play, and how students should use the provided maps in their decision.

  • Teacher Guide / Instructor Summary | Contains At-A-Glance Summary, Instructions for using the Case Study, and needed hyperlinks. 
  • PowerPoint Slides & Script for Teacher Use | Slides for teachers to use as an introduction to the “Building a Greenway: Case Study.” The PowerPoint outlines the case study background, including maps from the Case Study. Script includes recommended commentary as well as a guide for how to read and use the maps in the case study.
  • Student Case Study Synopsis / Background Reading | The Case Study Synopsis provides an overview of mapping tools, greenways, the goals of the greenway development, and the issues at hand. Students should read this as an introduction to the activity.
  • Student Map Set | Printable student map set for use with the EnviroAtlas “Building a Greenway: Case Study.” Recommended to be printed in color or displayed on screens. Teachers should assign stakeholder roles or have students choose a role.
