Selected Application Summary

The selected application will support the Saint Paul Island Renewable Energy Integration Project by upgrading and expanding the use of renewable wind energy and reducing reliance on diesel. The project will improve the Saint Paul Island power plant grid by upgrading existing wind turbine infrastructure to support reliable integration of wind power. Three additional 100-kilowatt (kW) turbines and a battery energy storage system will be installed at the Saint Paul Island power plant, improving transmission efficiency and further reducing reliance on diesel. The integration of renewable energy will benefit the Aleut Community of Saint Paul Island by delivering cost savings from lower energy bills, enhancing energy stability, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, increasing environmental resilience, and creating jobs associated with project activities.

Key Things to Know

Based on information provided by the applicant, the selected project will deliver the following benefits to reduce GHGs and support communities 1:

  • Add three 100-kW turbines and a battery energy storage system at the Saint Paul Island power plant.
  • Reduce use of fossil fuel by diverting an estimated 200 megawatt hours per year of excess electrical energy generation.
  • Supply 50% of Saint Paul Island’s energy needs with renewables and reduce up to 207,900 gallons per year of diesel fuel use.
  • Improve wind turbine utilization and transmission efficiency of the power grid, increasing resilience, reliability, and continuity of power.
  • Stabilize energy costs, decrease exposure to emissions and environmental pollutants, and increase economic development in the community.

Activities and benefits summarized above reflect the measures in Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium’s Priority Climate Action Plan (pdf) (3.6 MB).

1  The emission reduction estimates, as well as the descriptions of measures and benefits, were summarized from information provided by the applicant. These estimates, along with the award amount, are subject to change.

EPA will award grants to selected applicants once they meet all legal and administrative requirements. As of August 2024, grants are expected to be awarded by the end of 2024.
