Selected Application Summary
The selected application will construct a water-storage dam upstream of the existing Humpback Creek Hydroelectric project. This construction, along with capacity and efficiency upgrades to the existing hydroelectric infrastructure, will support clean air and waterways, benefiting the City of Cordova's core industry of seafood harvesting and its maritime ecosystems. Given the region’s climate, hydropower is considered the ideal solution for mitigating the use of diesel fuel, as it poses minimal negative environmental impacts. The addition of a bulk storage element to store excess water, primarily from spring runoff and rainstorms in winter and summer, will increase existing hydropower capacity to manage peak seafood processing loads during water shortfall periods in July and August.

Based on information provided by the applicant, the selected project will deliver the following benefits to reduce GHGs and support communities 1:
- Reduce the community’s reliance on diesel fuel for electricity generation by approximately 50%, decreasing fossil fuel consumption and lowering carbon emissions.
- Increase the community's energy supply to nearly 90% renewable, promoting sustainability and energy independence.
- Enhance public health and wellbeing in the Tribal community by reducing emissions of harmful pollutants, leading to improved air quality and healthier ecosystems.
- Decrease commercial and residential energy expenses and accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles and heat pumps.
